Journey to Mindfulness–Day 6

Day 6:  Say Yes! to the present moment.

“Always say “yes” to the present moment. What could be more futile, more insane, than to create inner resistance to what already is? what could be more insane than to oppose life itself, which is now and always now? Surrender to what is. Say “yes” to life — and see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you.”~Eckhart Tolle

I remember this day clearly.  A brisk sunny day in the city.  San Francisco.  A visit to the Conservatory of Flowers and a short hike in Golden Gate Park.

Life was not going as we planned.  So many worries, so much resistance.  So we gave ourselves a day in the city to breathe.  To remind us of life outside our limited perspectives.  Much needed time to reconnect with nature.  Grounding.  Free.

My little one found delight in the stairs.  Squeals.  Worries.

What if he trips?  What if he falls head over heels?  What if my husband misses a step?  Paralyzing fears, just like my life, the same reasons we came to the city to escape.  The habitual response to say No! Let’s not.  No!  Don’t do that.  No!  That’s not a good idea.

So, I stopped.  I looked up at the sunny blue sky.  I took a deep breath.  And I let go.

Taking my camera out of my backpack, I was able to snap this joy filled delight of a picture.  My little one.  Fun adventure.  Up and down.  Squeals.  Laughs.

The present moment.
Right there, waiting to be experienced.
Full of life.  The abundance of grace.  Easy.  Peaceful.

We can live life in our thoughts, or we can experience the present moment.  Mindfulness to the choice between these two worlds provides a stark contrast in truth, depth of joy and vivacity.  Thoughts are judgments about the past or the future, but the present moment, it’s real, it’s now, it’s free.

There are so many reasons we say no.  Question those reasons, be mindful of the space in which they exist, and then, say yes.

For today, say yes to the present moment.  If someone asks you to do something, say yes.  Should you want to go on a new adventure, do it.  Try something you have not yet experienced.  Go to a place you have been meaning to go.  Experience a yes world.  Become mindful to the moment, as it is, waiting right here for you.  Full of life.  Easy.  Peaceful.  Real.
